“Welcome to The National Seaweed Company – Sustainable Seaweed Art from the Heart of Devon”
We’re Stuart and Charlotte, a husband-and-wife team with a lifelong love of the sea, beach-combing, and turning nature’s treasures into beautiful, sustainable art. At The National Seaweed Company, we specialise in crafting limited edition seaweed prints, greeting cards, wrapping paper, gifts, and textiles inspired by the ever-changing beauty of Devon’s coastline. The National Seaweed Company also incorporates, The Devon Seaweed Company, which allows us to continue celebrating and sharing the unique treasures of Devon’s shores.
Our journey began on the Sussex coast in Brighton and Hove, where we both fell in love with the sea. With family roots in Devon and a shared dream of living by the ocean, it was natural for us to return to this stunning coastal region to settle down, start our family, and pursue our passion for nature-inspired design.
Charlotte’s creative vision stems from a background in design, having studied architecture at the Oxford School of Architecture. Her passion for botanical pressing began in the 1980s, sparked by a gift from her grandmother: a small flower press and the encouragement to explore foraged treasures. Her grandmother also passed down a deep knowledge of foraging and preserving natural materials, teaching Charlotte the delicate art of pressing seaweed and sharing both practical techniques and a philosophy of respecting and celebrating nature. This early mentorship sparked a lifelong fascination with preserving the intricate beauty of the ocean’s flora. Over time, Charlotte’s focus evolved exclusively into seaweed pressing, inspired by the richness of Devon’s tides and the intricate textures of its coastal plants.
Stuart’s scientific background, with a degree in Chemistry from Sussex University, complements Charlotte’s artistic perspective. Together, we blend art and science to create pieces that are not only visually stunning but also environmentally sustainable, celebrating the natural beauty of the ocean while minimising our impact.
At The National Seaweed Company, every creation – from our limited edition Devon seaweed printsto our unique seaweed-inspired gifts and homewares – tells the story of the coast. Our work connects people with the ocean, bringing the magic of Devon’s beaches, marine flora, and coastal wildlife into homes in a meaningful and eco-friendly way.
